Tasmania or ‘Tassie’ might be Australia’s smallest state but it’s jam-packed with natural hidden wonders. This memorable road trip will take you through some of the most pristine and jaw-dropping landscapes in the Southern hemisphere. You’ll travel from the vibrant city of Hobart via the UNESCO World Heritage Wilderness Area on the West Coast and the alpine landscapes of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park to the pristine beaches of the Freycinet Peninsula. Day 1 Hobart On arrival at Hobart airport you’ll be met and transferred to your city hotel. Hobart is a thriving city on the banks of the Derwent River. For art lovers, taking the short ferry trip up river to MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) is a must. It houses one of the world’s most controversial private collections of modern art and antiquities. Other attractions include the vibrant Salamanca Market, held every Saturday morning, and Salamanca Place, packed with galleries, craft shops and excellent eateries, all housed in 18th century warehouses. Days 2-3 Strahan (300 kms) Head for the West coast this morning and the gateway to Tasmania’s UNESCO World Heritage Wilderness Area. The region has a rich and varied history with historic mining towns and a harsh convict past. A wilderness cruise on the Gordon River is highly recommended and includes dedicated onboard guides and two walking tours. Days 4-5 Cradle Mountain (144 kms) Cradle Mountain sits at the northern end of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and is a diverse wilderness area, providing a rich habitat for wildlife including platypus, echidna and Tasmanian devils. You’ll spend 2 nights here allowing plenty of time to explore at your own pace; there are numerous walking trails to enjoy including the Dove Lake Circuit in the shadow of Cradle Mountain. Day 6 Launceston (141 kms) Tasmania’s second largest city is surrounded by cool climate vineyards. Wilderness is easily accessible, with Cataract Gorge just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of the city and the Narawntapu National Park is also close by. Days 7-8 Freycinet National Park (176 kms) The next two days will be spent on the Freycinet Peninsula, where glorious white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters sit against the pink granite backdrop of The Hazards. Bush walks, beachcombing and water-based experiences are the order of the day. Day 9 Departure Reference : PT
