Madeira. A destination with all-round sunshine, beautiful natural scenery and gorgeous beaches, it has a lot to offer for those seeking, well…just about anything!

Perhaps better known for its summer holidays (and rightly so too), Madeira isn’t always considered for its winter getaways in the same vein. But this is a holiday destination for all seasons – and can offer something quite special on the lead up to Christmas and New Year. Intrigued? We hope so! If you’re looking for a winter holiday with a difference, then read on…

Markets, sun and celebrations!

What’s more, pay a visit to Madeira on the lead up to Christmas and you’ll experience one of Europe’s sunniest Christmas markets. Held in the heart of its main capital, Funchal, you’ll find an array of traditional souvenirs, typical delicacies and drinks of the season and a festive, upbeat atmosphere to give you an insight into the local culture. Plus, there are plenty of entertainment shows, Christmas carols and performances to enjoy too, to get you into the Christmas spirit. The market runs from 01 December to 07 January – be sure not to miss it.

And onto New Year’s Eve. For those who like to experience a mighty fireworks display, Madeira certainly has it – it has even won the Guinness World Records in past years for having the world’s largest fireworks show! Whether it be from the port of Funchal or a cruise ship deck, you’ll have front row seats. The incredible display lights up the sky with colour, and in Funchal, you’ll find an impressive stage in the amphitheatre with thousands of multi-coloured lamps – something quite spectacular! And to top it off, Madeira is in the same time zone as the UK, meaning that you can see the New Year in at the same time as your loved ones at home.

An adventure lover’s paradise

In addition to the Christmas and New Year festivities, there’s plenty more to be seen on the island. There are heaps of epic day excursions available to get out and explore all year-round, from kayaking, snorkelling, whale and dolphin observation and paddle boarding – or for those wanting to go to the next level, paragliding, and diving excursions are available too to give you the adrenaline rush you were after!

There’s lots to choose from on land too; day hikes, horse riding, bike tours and (for those even more adventurous) canyoning are also on the list of excursions available. Whichever you choose, we’re certain you’ll be impressed with the scenery; including impressive cliffs looking out onto the ocean, lush forests and cascading waterfalls – listen out for the rare birds too, you might be lucky enough to spot them. Be sure to take a camera where you can, as we think there are some Instagram worthy shots to be had!

A day of exploring no doubt works up an appetite for a well-deserved meal in the evening – and in Madeira, it’s easy to enjoy fresh food wherever you go due to its year-long warm climate. The island’s capital, Funchal is famous for its authentic restaurants, or if you’ve got a kitchen in your accommodation, take a trip to the local farmer’s market, named Mercado dos Lavradores where you can pick up a huge variety fresh fish, meat and vegetables to cook up your own feast.

Fewer crowds and better value for money

Whilst we appreciate that summer holidays are a staple, holidaying in the winter months often means that you’ll have more space to enjoy the scenery, attractions, lively restaurants and bars. Pre-booking excursions and restaurants won’t always be needed, giving the option for a little spontaneity should you be quite so adventurous – and wandering around the local streets will feel leisurely and relaxed, but still with a warm and friendly atmosphere.

A holiday outside of the summer season often means you’ll bag more for your buck too. There are most certainly deals to be had – or if you’d like to stay in luxury accommodation on a 3-star budget, then the winter months will allow that to happen.

Staying safe on holiday

Whilst we hope that in months to come, we’ll be able to travel again like we used to, until then Madeira is continuing to create safe holidays for those who choose to travel during this time.

The Madeira Islands are currently working with the SGS, the world leader in certification to ensure the correct safety measures are taken to create the lowest possible risk when travelling here. This will mean that currently, you’ll notice a few changes including presenting a negative Covid test prior to departure, mandatory wearing of masks and social distancing to name of a few examples. Whilst this is different to what we’re used to, these measures make sure visitors and residents are safe and can continue to enjoy the beauty of Madeira.

Utah: a great outdoor adventure!

When you think of the US, Utah probably isn’t the first state that comes to mind – but we’re here to change that! With five incredible National Parks, some of the best skiing in the world, and bustling Salt Lake City – which has restaurants, bars, galleries and lots of sport activities available – this is a destination with just about everything. It’s the place to hit the open road on a classic American road trip.

In fact, there’s so much to see and do that we’re going to focus on the impressive National Parks that’ll you’ll find here – all with breath-taking views and walking trails.

Arches National Park

There’s no doubt why Arches National Park is one of America’s top National Parks. With 73,234 acres of red sandstone, mixed with towers, rubs, gargoyles and balanced rocks, it’s a feast for the eyes, with something amazing to look at, at every turn. Its name is quite self-explanatory, due to the many natural arches in the National Park – over 2,000 in fact!

On a visit here, hiking is a must, with trails throughout the park that lead to some awesome viewpoints. If you’ve got time to stay for the evening, you’ll be star stuck (literally), by the sensational night sky and the thousands of stars shining bright like you’ve never seen before. Camping or a motorhome is a great option at Arches National Park, and whilst there’s only one campsite in the park itself, there are plenty of options nearby, making it easy to pop back and forth during your stay.

Bryce Canyon National Park

The unique rock formations are what Bryce Canyon is known best for – in fact, it boasts the largest collection of hoodoos (a particular type of pinnacle-like rock formation) in the world. They dominate the huge amphitheatre that stretches out as far as the eye can see.

There are four main viewpoints to admire the scenic beauty as well as walking trails to explore, plus horseback rides, full moon hikes, and constellation tours. Geology talks from one of the expert Rangers are available too to learn about the fascinating plant and wildlife in the park as well as the geological and culture history.

Whilst the summer is a special time to visit, the winter doesn’t disappointment either, and brings a different experience – the park allows you to snowshoe or cross-country ski the plateau top! Equipment can be hired outside of the park before you make your way in.

If you’re looking to stay inside the park, there’s Bryce Canyon Lodge, or Bryce Canyon City offers a number of hotels on the edge.

Canyonlands National Park

If hiking and off-road adventures are your bag, then Canyonlands National Park is the place for you. In fact, there is 70 miles of hiking available – so it’ll be a challenge doing it all! Opting for a guided off-road tour of Canyonlands is the best bet on a trip here, as it’ll take you into the depths of the park and to the most impressive views – and with over 500 square miles of park to explore, it’s a tough job deciding exactly where and what to see, so they’ll make sure you cover all of the best bits.

There’s time for a chill out too, with calm waters under impressive cliff sides to sit back and take in the scenes. If you’re feeling brave, take a multi-day guided trip on Cataract Canyon which host Class V Rapids – it’ll be sure to give you an adrenaline rush and a real sense of adventure!

Capitol Reef National Park

Located in southern Utah’s desert, Capitol Reef National Park is filled with cliffs, canyons, domes, and bridges. The 8-mile scenic drive leads you through millions of years of geological history to incredible viewpoints. Take one of two spur dirt roads – Grand Walsh or Capitol George – for more impressive, scenic views which shouldn’t be missed.

In the Fruita Historic District learn about the pioneer community of Fruita, Freemont culture and view ancient petroglyph panels. Don’t miss the orchards where many varieties of fruits planted by Latter-day Saint pioneers still grow. Here you can pick your own fruit – you pay for what you pick, and the season will determine whether it’s apples, apricots, cherries, peaches, pears or plums. If you’re feeling peckish don’t miss the delicious locally baked fruit pies available from The Gifford House.

Zion National Park

Last but by no means least, Zion National Park, is best known for its towering sandstone cliffs and famous hiking trails. If you’re a keen camper or have chosen to hire an RV, then Zion is a great choice, with a wide choice of campsites in the area. Activities including horse rides, cycling, canyoneering and a spot of stargazing will make a trip here extra special. Plus, Zion National Park has over 300 days a sunshine per year, so you’ll likely enjoy bright blue skies as you explore your surrounds.

If you’re looking for a hike, we recommend Angels Landing (a head for heights is needed) or The Narrows, and for families, Emerald Pools Trail which follows a small, lush stream that collects in a series of ‘pools’. Choose from a hike of 1.2 miles, 2 miles or 2.5 miles – and if you like, you could spend a whole day hanging out here.

Salt Lake City – Utah’s capital

Beyond the National Parks, there’s a lot more to Utah, including its vibrant capital, Salt Lake City which can be added on at the end or beginning of your Utah adventure. With high-end hotels, restaurants galore, an array of galleries, museums and its very own Olympic Park which hosts sports activities all year-round – there’s plenty to do here for a few days. Visit on the third Friday of the month and the galleries stay open late for the public – and after, head to one of the hidden speakeasies for a tipple (if you can find it, that is)!

Alternatively, Las Vegas is another great gateway to Utah’s impressive National Parks and can easily be tagged on at the beginning or end of your Utah adventure, giving you bustling cities and remarkable scenery in one trip. Sounds exciting to us!

Well-known for its summer holidays, Malta’s a dream when it comes to warm weather and relaxing days by the pool. The more adventurous head here for the fantastic diving spots offering historic shipwrecks to explore. But what about Malta’s wonderful cities? They have many stories to tell!

From the elegant 16 ^th century UNESCO capital city of Valletta, Malta’s medieval capital, Mdina and sleepy Victoria over in Gozo – these three cities offer history, charm and beautiful scenery (there’s a reason why Malta is one of the world’s most popular filming destinations)! We think Malta is a city break destination in its own right, and we’re here to tell you why…

Valletta

Known by many as the ‘Island of Honey’, it’s clear after one look that there are many reasons as to why: Most of Malta is built from the local honey-coloured limestone, and whilst that may not be all that fascinating on its own, once you pair that with an impressive 300 days of guaranteed sunshine which Malta receives throughout the year, it makes for quite the sight to behold as the cities appear to radiate with a regal, golden glow. This is no exception in capital city Valletta, which boasts an awe-inspiring ‘golden stone fortress’, so ancient looking that it gives off a real essence of being transported back in time through the pages of a history book.

With over 320 historical sites in 80 hectares, to say there is a lot to do here would be an understatement. It goes without saying that the architecture is impressive in Valletta – the Grandmaster Palace Courtyard and stunning St. John’s Co-Cathedral are extra special, being both stunning to behold and steeped with historical importance. Sit back and take in the beauty from the Upper Barrakka Gardens, where you’ll find panoramic views of the Grand Harbour, large enough to dock literally thousands of boats and therefore making it one of the largest marinas in the world.

After a jam-packed day of sightseeing, you can wind down by taking a relaxing stroll in the romantic Lower Barrakka Gardens, dotted with monuments, plaques and a 10-ton bronze bell of commemoration to those who died in the two-year siege of Malta.

And we’ve not even gotten onto the food scene. With its array of cool cafes and stylish eateries, it’ll make those essential pit-stops a people watchers dream, making it the perfect opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of the city.

Good to know: If Valletta leaves you wanting to see more fortified cities, then you’re in luck! ‘Three Cities’, the collective name of three other fortified cities in Malta; Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua which can be explored in a fun and exciting way by renting an electric-powered car from the Rolling Geeks.

Mdina

Not forgetting what has come to be known as the ‘Silent City’, Mdina – Malta’s old capital which was once home to Malta’s past nobility and dates back an incredible 4,000 years! Surrounded by fortified bastion walls, its peaceful ambience and collection of preserved buildings brings a timeless feel to it, and there’s a lot to appreciate; including gorgeous, cobbled streets lined with medieval and baroque architecture, an array of museums and relaxing wine bars.

Views pack a punch too, as the city is perched atop a hill roughly 250 metres above sea level, so you can sit back and take in views of the rest of the island. Other not-to-be-missed attractions include the filming location for Kings Landing in Game of Thrones, the baroque cathedral, and Palazzo De Piro – a centre for arts and culture with an on-going programme of events, including art exhibitions and artisan markets.

If you’re budget isn’t too tight, the Michelin star restaurant; De Mondion is well worth splashing out on. Set inside the luxurious Xara Palace Hotel, a 16 ^th century building – on the top floor, you’ll be spoiled with stunning views whilst enjoying flavoursome Mediterranean dishes of the best produce the island has to offer.

Victoria (Rabat)

Over on the smaller, sleepier island of Gozo, is the city of Victoria. Previously known as Rabat, the city changed its name in 1887 to honour Queen Victoria in her Jubilee year. Sat in the centre of Gozo, this small walled city can’t be missed, as pretty much all roads on the island lead to here! While you’re in Victoria, take a stroll around the museums, cathedral and most importantly, the Cittadella. Also known as the Castello, this is Victoria’s most popular tourist attraction, and impressively, it dates back to 1500 BC! Another attraction not to be missed here is St George’s Basillica, located bang in the centre of Victoria. As the most important church in Gozo both artistically and architecturally, you can be certain you’ll want your camera at hand for this one.

Whilst Victoria is on the neighbouring island of Gozo, it’s easy to get from Malta to Gozo, with ferries available every 30 minutes during peak times. Sailing between Cirkewwa in Malta and Mgarr in Gozo, the journey itself takes approx. 25 minutes, making it an easy day trip.

Something different

If you’ve had your fill of fortified, historical cities, why not try something a little different? Only a couple of miles from the village of Mellieha, you’ll find the picturesque 1980’s film set of Popeye Village – now used as a fun park – a great spot if you’re travelling with little ones.

A destination for all seasons

Just a three-hour flight away, Malta makes for a perfect city break for all seasons, with mild weather in the winter months and hot weather throughout the summer. As a small island, you can explore somewhere new each day, turning it into an adventurous holiday jam-packed with excursions – all of which can be combined with some much-needed relaxation by the pool. Can’t decide between a city or beach break? We say, why not do both? Go ahead and spoil yourself with these fantastic ‘two-for-one’ destinations, where you can enjoy the best of both! There are plenty of destinations like these out there, but to help you decide, we’ve shared our top three…

Barcelona

Blessed with what is arguably the most phenomenal architecture in the world around every corner, tantalising tapas and fruity wines, we can’t think of a better destination than beautiful Barcelona.

Anyone who appreciates architecture will be familiar with the name Antoni Gaudí and will also know that his work is exquisitely unique, combining elements of Art Nouveau, Catalan Modernism and Spanish Late Gothic design. With Barcelona being the best place to see his finest work up close, from Park Güell and Casa Batlló to the astonishing La Sagrada Familia, whose construction is still unfinished since 1882, there is a lot of ground to cover!

The charming Gothic Quarter has so much to offer; complete with quaint cobbled alleyways, grand cathedrals, drool-worthy eateries, and the Picasso Museum with traditional, live flamenco shows just opposite at the 17 ^th century stately palace; Palau Dalmases, creating the perfect, ambient setting.

Within easy-to-reach distances you can find several beaches to wind-down on and take the edge off of all the exploring you’ll do, with the closest being Barceloneta Beach. It’s one of Barcelona’s oldest, closest and most loved beaches, it can get very busy in the summer months, so get there early to get a good spot. If you’re looking for something a bit quieter, there’s the beautiful Bogatell Beach which attracts an older crowd, or Sant Sebastià which is popular with the locals.

Top Tip: The legendary Sagrada Familia can get quite busy and often be fully booked. To ensure you don’t miss out, book ahead of time.

Athens:

Being one of the oldest cities in the world, Athens is graced with fascinating history, commonly found at the top of the bucket list for most culture vultures. Full to the brim with neoclassical buildings, lush art galleries and cute cafes, there’s lots to see and do.

To state the obvious; there’s plenty of Port wine tasting tours. Secondly, Porto has been rumoured to be one of J.K Rowling’s influences for her first Harry Potter novel whilst having lived there for two years. With striking resemblances of the Hogwarts school uniform perhaps adapted from the cloaked, college students of Porto, or the Lello bookshop’s similarities in Flourish and Blotts and the Grand Hogwarts staircase, you’ll see exactly what we’re talking about. Otherwise known for being a culinary capitol and port paradise, you can expect mouth-watering Portuguese dishes and relaxing cruises on the Douro river.

Only a short-15minute drive away, you can chill out at the sandy, blue flag Praia dos Ingleses beach, lined with popular restaurants, cafes and bars. Or if you’re looking for more fun in the sun, head to Praia de Matosinhos instead, where you can find lots of surf schools if you fancy picking up a new skill! What we love about Porto, is it’s not often considered as a beach destination, but it will surprise you with its rugged coastline and dramatic natural scenery.

Top tip: It’s just as easy to reach Porto’s beaches by public transport. So if you’ve not hired a car, Praia do Senhor da Pedra and Praia da Aguda can be easily reached by train from Sao Bento train station.

Visit Crane Point Hammock – a natural history museum where ongoing archaeological digs reveal seven centuries of visitors and residents. Hike through a wondrously preserved tropical hardwood grove and visit the home of an early 20th-century settler family. Rent a boat for a day at sea or visit The Turtle Hospital – a small non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation of endangered sea turtles, which is entirely supported by the interest in visitors like you. Additionally, Marathon makes for a great place to learn to dive – with shallow dive sites such as Delta Shoals, Coffin Patch and Sombrero Reef – home to coral canyons and archways providing an array of sea life.

THE LOWER KEYS

Home to two national wildlife refuges, a national marine sanctuary and a state park, The Lower Keys are surrounded by a marine environment filled with abundant terrestrial and marine wildlife.

Touring Austria with Inghams: Sensational scenery and charming details

We caught up with Inghams’ own Julie Franklin, Head of Agency Sales who recently returned from a wonderful week in Austria, wisely having done a twin-centre holiday visiting both Saalbach and Zell am See. In our blog, Julie shares the highlights of her trip with us, which we think will give you lots of inspiration for a fantastic mountainous holiday destination!

Travelling as a group of girlfriends who all enjoy the outdoors but have different ideas for a holiday, this Austrian summer adventure managed to tick the boxes for all involved, and it’s not difficult to understand why. From enchanting emerald lakes hidden between marvellous mountains to charmingly picturesque towns and cities, Austria is the ideal destination for any outdoor enthusiast wanting to revitalise the mind and body while connecting with nature. What’s not to like?

Without further ado, let’s walk you through Julie’s amazing trip and everything the girls got up to in Austria. Be warned, there’s a strong likelihood that by the time you finish reading, you’ll want to book your own holiday here as soon as possible!

RESORT CARD

A real added-value feature of this holiday was the personalised ‘Joker’ resort card (free with the Inghams package), as it ended up saving the girls a fortune, giving them each access to the buses, the chairlifts and gondolas, as well as various attractions which were either completely free or had reduced entrances. Like Julie, we are rather partial to a bargain when we see one! card) to the park area, which is perfect for adults and children alike, with high ropes, zip lines, tree top walks, and fabulous walks to mountain restaurants with stunning views.

SAALBACH

There are 2 chairlifts from the resort in Saalbach, and Julie opted to take the Schattberg X-press up the mountain purely for the views. Needless to say, they weren’t left disappointed. Julie adds; “A day pass on the chairlifts would usually cost €30, so the fact we could go up for free meant that simply going up for the view alone was more than justified.”

HOTEL TIROLERHOF, ZELL AM SEE

After a few glorious days in Saalbach, the group headed to Zell am See on a free, 30-minute transfer bus, taking further advantage of their resort card.

Staying at the picturesque Hotel Tirolerhof which Julie describes as “a fabulous spa”, the girls were delighted to be so close, to not only the centre of Zell, but also to the stunning lake, providing breath-taking views from the indoor pool and spa areas. Julie points out that “clothing is not an option in the spas, so you will need to have an open mind”. But with such incredible views, various steam rooms and saunas, the girls could think of nowhere they would rather be to chill out and relax.

HOTEL SAALBACHER HOF, SAALBACH

Staying at the fabulous Hotel Saalbacher Hof in Saalbach, Julie and friends were perfectly placed in the charming centre of this traditional resort, complete with a relaxing outdoor pool located in the hotel’s stunning gardens which Julia described as a perfect way to spend the day when they weren’t out exploring all that Saalbach has to offer.

Not knowing the area themselves at all, the girls appreciated the ‘resort ramble’ from the local representative, which was essentially a guided tour of the resort, highlighting the history of the various landmarks in Saalbach and pointing out places of interest. As well as how to get around, chairlifts locations to get up into the mountains and more, proving a most helpful introduction to the local area and irrefutably saving the group lots of time figuring things out for themselves.

HINTERGLEMM

For a lovely way to start the holiday and ease into the local area, Julie recommends a leisurely and scenic 45-minute walk along the Saalach riverside to Hinterglemm, the next resort along. As well as taking in the scenery, you’ll stumble across a charming wood-carving workshop where you can wander around and buy interesting pieces along the way to Hinterglemm. Upon arriving in Hinterglemm itself, the group enjoyed what Julie describes as the most “fantastic iced coffee and handmade ice cream” in the family-run Miksch Café Schleckena. A quaint location all year round, Hinterglemm is known for being Austria’s biggest ski resort for the winter and has an array of options for hiking in the summer, as well as horseback riding and even mountain climbing, depending on how adventurous you are feeling.

TALSCHLUSSWEG

You can also take the local bus to a place called Talschlussweg for free using the resort card, to then jump on the Noddy Train (otherwise known as End of the Valley Train – also free with the resort

Using the resort card once more, Julie and the girls booked one of the guided walks that took them up in a gondola to start with, a chairlift and then walked along a track on what Julie says “felt like we were at the top of the world!” And one of the best things about this guided walking tour is that the girls all had different abilities, so whilst some walked ahead a little faster and others took a slower pace, it didn’t disrupt the walk or take away from the experience at all – each of them loved it. To end the walk on a high, the girls were rewarded with delicious food and a Radler at Franzl restaurant with unbeatable views.

No visit to an Austrian lake resort is complete without taking a dip in the lake itself! This hotel also gives free access to the lido, so the girls enjoyed a swim and a bit of time to chill. We can’t imagine there being anything like a swim in a lake surrounded by mountains.

Eric and Sam go Cruising!!

Eric and I had the most amazing time on our Regent Seven Seas Cruise.

We are typing this message by the pool in Santa Barbara. We decided to have add 4 nights onto our itinerary. We collected a car at the port and drove 2 hours up the coast.

Thought we would share a full blog of our trip.

Eric and I chose ”Jewels of the Pacific” on board Regent Seven Seas Mariner for our belated 25th Wedding Anniversary.

Well it was most certainly well worth the wait.

Following our flight with British Airways we were transferred to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel for our pre cruise night stay. The next morning after a leisurely breakfast we were transferred to the ship which took almost 2 hours due to the very heavy Los Angeles traffic.

The check-in process prior to embarkation was simple and efficient as within minutes we were sat having a champagne lunch in The Veranda restaurant.

The offer when we booked was a two category upgrade, so after lunch we went to our penthouse suite where we were greeted by our butler who showed us the suite and explained everything we needed to know. We had a choice of canopies and they would be in our suite at 5pm. We had a complimentary laundry service. Our in suite bar was filled daily with every drink of our choice. Mrinal, our butler, explained we would receive a passages booklet each evening when we returned from dinner. The passages booklet explained the whole programme of events for the following day as well as giving brief news on matters back home ( change of Prime Minister just one item of news )

Once we had unpacked we ventured around the ship to get our bearings. We went into the spa, the gym, and after that took in all the bars and restaurants on board. The bars include Mariner Lounge, Observation Lounge, Horizon Lounge, Stars lounge and the Pool bar. There is “Coffee Connection” where teas and coffee are available most of the day with snacks, cakes etc. We went to check out the casino and find the restaurants. Compass Rose, Sette Marie @ La Veranda. The two specialty restaurants are Prime 7 and Chartreuse where bookings are required. The Pool grill offers food until 4pm. That night we set sail at 6pm. We also visited the Constellation theatre where entertainment takes place most nights for those who enjoy a variety of shows.

Our first port the following morning was Ensenada in Mexico where we just had a wonder along the waterfront and enjoyed the feel of the lovely warm sunshine.

Day 3. We had a lovely relaxing day at sea and enjoyed the very spacious sun decks. The pool was extremely refreshing in the heat of the day.

Day 4 Temperatures still rising as we arrive into Cabo San Lucas. Our chosen activity today was to jump on a horse albeit not easy for Sam!! Our horseback ride took us through the cactus landscape before we eventually reached the most beautiful beach. Not one person on the beach but then you realise the strong Pacific waves are not very inviting – not even for surfers!!

Day 5 Having sailed a short distance overnight the Mariner tied up in La Paz. Later that morning we kayaked in the beautiful turquoise waters. The water was so warm and so after breaking in to a sweat Kayaking it was too good to miss a swim in the ocean.

Day 6 Our next Mexican port was Mazatlan where we took the blue line walking tour which starts almost immediately after you disembark the ship. A ten minute walk brought us in to the town where there is actually a full size replica of the Beatles crossing Abbey Road on the zebra crossing. Beatlemania was very evident as down the same street was a replica of the Cavern in Liverpool!!

Day 7 Due to a hurricane sweeping in off the Pacific, a decision was made by the captain to change the itinerary. Unfortunately, we were to miss our visit to Manzanillo but instead sail to Puerto Vallarta one day earlier. There would be sufficient time to spend in Puerto Vallarta but we needed to be heading north overnight to miss the incoming storm which was now a Category 3 hurricane. Eric and I walked to the beautiful Marina and returned to the ship for lunch. This was no doubt the hottest day with temperatures in the 90’s and the humidity over 85%!! Our four mile walk to the marina and back was enough in that heat so the afternoon was spent relaxing and cooling off on the sundeck of the Mariner.

Days 8 and 9 were at sea. The weather remained very good as we had left behind the stormy skies and heavy rainfall. How nice it was just to relax and take advantage of all the ships’ wonderful facilities.

Day 10 Early morning arrival into San Diego which was not on the itinerary but since we could not visit Manzanillo this was introduced as an alternative visit. Within minutes of disembarkation you are in the downtown area of San Diego – the dock is so close. It was so easy to walk around for a couple of hours although excursions had been arranged for anyone who was interested in visiting Mission Bay or the world famous zoo.

Day 11 and we were back where it all started.

Both Eric and I were amazed by the whole experience on the Mariner. The service on board was always with a smile and all the crew were so obliging. Within days they knew your name and always made you feel very special. Eric and I celebrated our belated anniversary in the Prime 7 restaurant where we were presented with a cake and a song. I was in tears!!

The shows in the theatre were superb. We think our absolute favourite was the Krew Kapers whereby certain members of the crew put together their own show and did they WOW us with their dancing and singing voices.

Well they do state they have the most luxurious fleet at sea and we would not disagree!!

We just can’t stop smiling about life on board Regent Seven Seas Mariner. Totally spoilt for 10 nights. Pure luxury!!!!

Ski Blog from our trip in March

Eric and I had a fabulous week skiing in Hinterglemm, situated in the Glemm Valley.

Just a 1hour 50mins flight from Leeds Bradford to Salzburg. Hinterglemm is one of the 3 first class resorts sharing 270km of extensive skiing. It is superb for all levels of skiers. You can ski to Leogang, Saalbach and Fieberbrunn. There are 140km Blue runs, 110km Red Runs and 20km Black Runs. For any first time skiers the Blue runs are the easiest but some are still a little challenging, (to be honest give me a Blue run anyday!!) The Black runs are way too challenging for me.

We stayed at the Alpine Palace a beautiful hotel in a great position right next to the Reiterkogel gondola. We had long days skiing around the area enjoying lots of coffee stops and lunches in the mountain huts. You can then go and relax in the outdoor swimming pool, whirlpool, sauna and steam rooms.

One evening we experienced something we have never done before. We went up one of the slopes from the village and skiied down the floodlit slopes. It was an amazing experience.

Eric and Sam’s trip to Florida

Eric and I have recently returned from a fabulous trip to Florida. We started our holiday with a flight from Manchester to Miami via London Heathrow on the Airbus A380.

On arriving into Miami we drove to Key Largo which is the start to the Florida Keys. This was about a one hour drive, which was enough after a very early start and a 9 hour flight from London to Miami. The next morning we set off to Key West stopping off at a great breakfast spot in Marathon called the Wooden Spoon. What a bustling little spot this was. Our journey down the Keys was very sad as the hurricane damage was very clear with piles of debris at the side of every road. Some of the Keys were hit more than others, but they are working very hard to clean up all the affected areas.

We arrived in Key West at around 1pm and checked into our Hotel. We chose to stay at a beachfront location situated across the road from Smathers Beach. The hotel offers a shuttle service to downtown taking approximately 15 minutes and runs every half hour there and back. If you choose to walk it takes around 45 minutes. We had a fabulous and very lively 4 nights. It was actually Fantasy Fest down in Key West. This is an annual 10 day costumed party in paradise for grown – ups. It is now considered to be the wildest extravaganza around! What a time we had over the 4 nights we stayed.

Things then calmed down as we headed off the Keys up to Fort Myers on the West coast of Florida to collect our son from the airport. Charlie flew out from Manchester to Fort Myers via Philadelphia.

We drove up to Siesta Key located on the west coast just south of Tampa. Siesta Key is one of our favourite places we have travelled to. The beach is beautiful as it is made up of 99% quartz so it never gets hot and is so white. It has again just been voted the best beach in the USA . The sunsets are fantastic. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment right in the centre of the village. There are local shops and restaurants close by. We had 8 nights and totally relaxed for the length of our stay.

It was then time to hit the road and travel up to Orlando, but on the way up we stopped at Busch Gardens in Tampa, about a one hour drive. This is a fabulous theme park with rides that appeal to the whole family. Eric and Charlies’ favourite were Cheetah Hunt, Sheikra, Cobra’s Curse and Montu……………. as you have gathered I look after the bags!!

We then left for Orlando, it took us about one hour to arrive at our hotel in Lake Buena Vista. It is a lovely area of Orlando and a great location for all of the theme parks. We only had 4 nights so made a decision on the parks to visit. We chose Universal studios and Islands of Adventure, two amazing parks now linked by the Hogwarts Express train. Both parks have fantastic rides once again suitable for the whole family. If you are a Harry Potter fan you will love ‘The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley’ at Universal studios and ‘The Wizarding World of Harry Potter –Hogsmeade’ at Islands of Adventure. Both parks are superb. Eric and Charlie would both have to agree that their favourite ride is ‘The Incredible Hulk’ My favourite ride is E.T.

On the final day we had a relaxing morning around the pool and then did some shopping at a Mall. We have in the past done all of the theme parks and Water parks apart from Volcano Bay which is a new water park. We have become to know Florida like the back of our hands so who better to talk to for any further information!!!!

Eric And Sam in Menorca July 2017

Eric and I have just returned from a wonderfully relaxing two weeks in Menorca. Just a short 2 and a half hour flight from Leeds Bradford. We collected a car from the airport. Menorca is the most laid-back and traditional of the major Balearic Islands. Compared to its neighbours Majorca and Ibiza, it’s been relatively unchanged by tourism, with resorts balanced by stunning natural beauty, secret beaches and historic architecture. There’s still plenty to do, with two cities and miles of coastline to explore. A great place to visit If you like walking or cycling.

We stayed in the resort of Son Bou, about a 40 minutes transfer from the airport. Son Bou probably has the best beach on the island that is easily accessible with a length of approximately 2kms. There are water sports on the beach and a huge inflatable play park just off shore. Life guards are dotted about ensuring everyone’s safety. There are 3 restaurants on the beach offering salads and fabulous fresh fish dishes.

The resort itself has some lovely restaurants and bars with wonderful home cooked food. There are also a couple of Pizza restaurants, an Indian and also a Chinese restaurant, so there is plenty of choice. There are some lovely little shops and a few Supermarkets selling everything you need.

We stayed at the Aparthotel HG Jardin de Menorca set on the outskirts of the resort about a 20 minute walk to the resort centre. Perched above the resort of Son Bou and providing stunning views, Aparthotel HG Jardin de Menorca is a fantastic family option on the relaxed island of Menorca. Surrounded by well-maintained spacious gardens and rustic countryside, this attractive property is ideal for doing as much or as little as you like. Make use of the hotel’s complimentary bus service which runs from 9am until 6pm. The hotel has 3 swimming pools and beautiful grounds with plenty of space to sunbathe and relax. The suites are very spacious and extremely clean and have excellent facilities.

We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis but you are able to do half board if you choose.

We loved having the car as we got to explore the Island. During the two weeks we visited:

Mahon

This cool capital does a grand job of merging beach with culture. Historic remnants pave the resort, with its beautifully-kept and renovated churches, and various architectural treasures.

Es Castell

Centred around a lively square and former parade ground, historic links to Britain still shine through in certain parts of the resort. There’s a deep red town hall dominating the inner streets, all easy to get around, plus bars and restaurants.

Fornells

An old fishing village that’s now a modern holiday hotspot. Seafood is king of the restaurants around the pretty harbour, so this makes a great lunch stop. Plus, it’s a short walk from Fornells to the Torre de Fornells, a 19th-century watchtower.

Ciutadella

Once the capital city of Menorca, Ciutadella still shines along the western coast. It’s brimming with culture, from its town hall and lighthouse to its big annual festival. Dine al fresco in the excellent choice of glorious eateries, sidling up to moored yachts. It’s a cosmopolitan area for those with cash to splash.

Cala Galdana

A calm, charming resort with a horseshoe-shaped white sand beach and family-friendly activities, Cala Galdana has plenty going on. Boat trips, scuba diving and lounging on the shore are all top priorities, while a huge limestone gorge lies in wait of exploration. It’s a pretty postcard scene.

Our visit to Portaventura

With just a 2 hour flight from Leeds Bradford fly into Reus and you will find the Theme parks Portaventura, Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park within a 20 minutes transfer.

Ride the tallest ride in Europe, Red Force reaching a speed of 0 – 180km/h in just 5 seconds in Ferrari Land.

On your visit to Port Aventura you will have rides and attractions to suit the whole family in what is undoubtedly one of the best theme parks in Europe.

The Aqua Park looks great fun but opens the end of May as it is seasonal.

Salou with its big expanse of beach is only a short walk from any of the resort hotels

It is easy to get around on local buses to local areas such as Cambrils and Taragona. From Portaventura train station you can get to Barcelona in approximately 1hr 15mins.

All in all a great destination for a short break.

The Art of Touring in Style

“The Art of Touring in Style”

I was invited by Insight Vacations to flavour the wonderful delights of a luxury touring holiday.

I did not know what to expect, but I will tell you, it is the best way to get to see a country.

My trip was to take me from Rome to Venice taking in the wonderful countryside of Umbria and Tuscany.

My Highlights:

All you have to do is get yourself up early, have breakfast, and the rest is left to the Tour Director.

Rome –Early start but well worth it as you get fast –tracked into the Vatican Museum. We also visited the Colosseum, again, no horrible queues to stand in.

Morning drive to Orvieto, the beautiful hilltop town where we visited the impressive Cathedral known to be one of Italy’s most celebrated buildings. In the afternoon we were entertained by Lorenzo Polegri the zesty “Etruscan chef”. We then headed on to Perugia and had a guided walk at night.

Next was Siena with its cobbled streets and where the famous Palio horse race takes place. Our day also included a visit to Chianti and the Tuscan countryside.

The towers and tastes of San Gimignano were next and this is the home to the world-famous Gelateria di Piazza run by the award-winning gelato maker, Sergio Dondoli. I tried the Black Olive and Goats cheese, Pink grapefruit and Prosecco and the Saffron Cream. I actually ate the lot!!!

We then continued on to Renaissance Florence where we walked through the streets to the Cathedral, admired the bell tower and “Gates of Paradise” before spending time amid the statues and fountains of Signoria Square.

Our final destination was Venice where we were whisked by private water taxi over to our Hotel. We had a guided walk around the back lanes and small squares and a gondola ride through the canals. Later we embarked a private boat over to the Island of Burano famous for its candy coloured houses and the “Pisa-esque” – the leaning bell tower.

What an amazing week I had. The local guides were incredibly knowledgeable and are so well known to the Tour directors. You do get lots of time on your own and some not so early starts!!!

All in all it was a fabulous trip. We did cram a lot in as it was a fact finding trip but we did find lots of time to sample the wonderful wines of the regions we visited.

Eric’s trip to Las Vegas

One might think that by flying in to Las Vegas we were going to stay amongst the bright lights and in some of the biggest hotels in the world, but not on this occasion. Las Vegas is the ideal gateway point to take in some of America’s best national parks and desert scenery.

Our flight arrived in Las Vegas late afternoon s, as opposed to driving straight off after a tiresome day travelling; we did overnight in Las Vegas.

After a good night’s sleep and a Denny’s breakfast, it was time to hit the road. Driving north, the sprawl of Las Vegas was soon left behind us and the rock of the desert surrounded us for a good hour. Climbing slowly the greenery began to appear and just two and half-hours after leaving Vegas we were at the entrance to Zion National Park.

The park has numerous walks and climbs with various levels of difficulty. A decision was made and the climb began to Hells Canyon.

Our route took us to the Weeping Rock, a vast porous rock face where the path terminates under a huge dripping cavernous rock formation. Onwards and upwards to another rock face only this time we had to walk round a narrow ledge on the rock face some 200 feet above the ground in order to access the canyon. There was a rail in places to cling on to but if you don’t have a head for nights then whatever you do, do not look down!

After a couple of nights in Zion, we moved on to Bryce Canyon which is only a short drive but the geography of the landscape is very different. Bryce is made up of hundreds of limestone spires, fins, arches and mazes collectively called hoodoos. Depending on the time of day, the sunshine results in an array of various colours as it glows on the rock formations.

Even at the height of the summer, we were surprised by the quietness of the roads as we drove onwards through Capitol Reef and on to Monument Valley.

This is real cowboy country although the land is actually an Indian reservation. Kayenta was our stopover point but if you enjoy a drink on a night then be prepared because none of the hotels sell alcohol current laws forbid, as this is still part of the Indian Reservation. The scenery in Monument Valley is quite spectacular and unique.

Flagstaff, Arizona was our next place to stay and this is an ideal base for visiting the Grand Canyon. Our visit to the Canyon was blessed with sunshine and temperatures in the high seventies. You cannot help but just stand on the rim of the Canyon and be totally in awe at the view that stretches out in front of you. A natural wonder of the world and rightly so.

With all the touring over it was now time to have several days relaxation and what better place than Stagecoach Trails Ranch in Arizona. When you leave the tarmac and drive for 11 miles on a dusty, sandy road you never think you are going to arrive but you do and you are welcomed in to the family to enjoy good old home cooking, lovely accommodation and horse riding across the desert. Because of the heat, you can only ride early morning or late afternoon but the experience is very detached from anything you have ever done before. The rides take you along dry riverbeds and desert scrubland and occasionally you may hear the rattle of the snake’s tail or see a Coyote. With very little artificial light, the desert sky is a remarkable sight and to sit out on a nighttime with the temperature gauge showing 76 degrees is just what the perfect holiday time is made of.

The ranch is only a two-hour drive back to Las Vegas but it could be a million miles away, such is the contrast. So many sights in just two weeks but it feels like two very enjoyable months!!

Florida

I have been lucky enough to visit Florida on 19 occasions so you could say I know plenty about it. Orlando is the big attraction of course and why should it not be with the range of Theme Parks it has to offer. There is though another side to Florida and this is the wonderful beach areas which can be found on both the West and East Coast of the state. You will note I have not mentioned the ‘Keys’. This is because there are not a tremendous number of beaches on the Keys. Key West has some of the larger beach areas but other than that you will only find beaches on a certain number of the islands.

Most holidays usually start with time in Orlando and they usually end there because people run out of time and they never get to travel to other areas which is such a shame. It is understandable as there is just so much to do in Orlando that you can quite easily fill two weeks’ holiday. Over the years I have always stayed in Orlando just so I can keep up to date with the Theme Parks and experience any new rides etc. Some attractions within the parks themselves come and go as new things come along to replace the old. Gone have the days of ‘King Kong’ and ‘Back to the Future’. New thrilling rides have replaced these on a different theme.

The Magic Kingdom is at present undergoing work which will increase its size. It is a never ending story of expansion and change in order to keep those 50 million plus visitors coming every year to Orlando.

Head West from Orlando and you come to the Pinellas Suncoast – an area where each resort area merges in to the next. St Petersburg, Clearwater, Treasure Island and Reddington Beach to name but a few on this stretch of coast. Cross over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and you first of all come to Bradenton. You can head to the beaches straight away and follow the coastal road all the way down to Sarasota. Now I am lucky enough to have travelled to a lot of places on this planet and believe me I have seen some beaches but I have never seen one as nice as Siesta Key in Sarasota. Only last year it was voted ‘best beach in America’ and this is an award it has received on several occasions as well as the award for ‘whitest sand’.

Venice, Englewood, Port Charlotte, Fort Myers and Naples, all lovely beach resorts within their own right as you travel South. A two hour drive East from Naples will take you accross the Everglades to either Fort Lauderdale or Miami. The sea is not usually as calm here as the sheltered waters of the Gulf of Mexico and it can be a few degrees cooler but it does not stop the beach lovers whose numbers swell on a typical Florida sunny day.

I have made the trip down to the ‘Keys’ on three occasions and along with my wife, Sam and our son Charlie, we have always eneded up in Key West. It really is such a laid back place and so different from mainland Florida. If you headed North as opposed to the Keys then you could pass through all the Atlantic coast resorts. The affluence of some of the resorts is there for all to see with 7 bedroom houses backing on to the waterway and luxury yachts tied to the mooring. Six lucky numbers and I will be back!!

Travelling North you eventually come to Cape Canaveral, the site of numerous Space Shuttle launches. The vistitors centre is well worth a call but you will need most of the day to get around everything. If time and money was not an issue, and it is for most people, then you could travel even further North up to Daytona and even Fort Augustus but it is usually a westward direction back to Orlando to be there in time for the return flight home.

Do you have a list of dream destinations? I have, and the Taj Mahal has always been in my top ten of places to see. In February 2012, I was lucky enough to take a trip to India, and it certainly is an incredible place My tour included the Golden Triangle of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, followed by a week relaxing in Goa. There was a lot of driving involved between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, but well worth the effort.

Delhi is divided into two distinct sections – the new and the old. The acclaimed British architect Edwin Lutyens, who was responsible for many landmarks in central London, designed much of New Delhi and its parliamentary buildings. Shah Jahan inspired the old city.

There are many sights to visit including the Memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, Jama Masjid Mosque, and the massive India Gate, which is a memorial to the lives laid down by Indian soldiers. Delhi is the gateway to the sights of Agra and Rajasthan.

Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal, Agra, in 1630 as a shrine for his beloved Queen, Mumtaz Mahal. It is an architectural wonder fashioned from white marble, and it took 20,000 artisans 17 years to complete the “Love Poem in Marble”. At dawn, the colours were beautiful and changed from a pinkish glow to a brilliant white. Of course, I had to have my photo taken on the “Princess Diana” seat! It was everything I had imagined it to be and more.

After visiting the old fort in Agra, it was on to Fatehpur Sikri. The Emperor Akber built the palace in 1569, but he abandoned it after only 15 years because of water shortages. The Ghost City, perched on a hillside, has beautifully preserved buildings, with tranquil gardens looking out over the plain.

It is possible to reach the Amber Fort in Jaipur on foot, by jeep or by elephant. I took a colourfully painted elephant, and enjoyed the views as we slowly made our way to the hilltop. Inside the palace is the famed Sheesh Mahal a room with jewels and mirrors embedded in the walls. At night, the rooms used to sparkle in the candlelight to create a romantic ambiance for King Man Singh, his 12 queens and many concubines.

The Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of Winds, is another famous Jaipur landmark. Hawa Mahal’s ornate pink facade of windows and balconies were designed to allow the women of the harem to watch, unnoticed, the colourful processions and enjoy the breeze. Jaipur, painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1853, is nicknamed “The Pink City”

After all the sights of the Golden Triangle, it was time to relax for a week on the beach. I stayed at the Park Hyatt in South Goa, which is the quieter area. The Hyatt is definitely one of my favourite hotels, with friendly staff, good food, and you can always get a sunbed by one of the pools! The hotels manicured lawns lead down to a glorious wide sandy beach, which stretches 15 miles down the coast. After a busy day reading a book, next to one of the pools, it was nice to relax with a cocktail whilst watching the sunset. A perfect end to an amazing trip!
